I went to UCLA for college, partially because of their tennis team, which produced legends like Arthur Ashe and Jimmy Connors. I got hooked to college tennis since, and spiritually, I never left.
Last year, they won the NCAA championship with a dramatic victory over Baylor. Four of the players graduated since, so this year was figured to be a grebuilding yearh, but this is Bruins. The team is strong enough for a repeat, but unfortunately lost in quarterfinal to the eventual champion Pepperdine.
But they were not finished. Our #1 singles player Ben Kohlloeffel went on to win the singles crown. The last time UCLA won singles title was by the current coach, Billy Martin. What a team.
Next yearfs team is expected to have everyone from this year returning, better, stronger and more experienced.
They brought 99th national title to the campus last year. Perhaps they will bring in 100th in 2007.
